Woodcut Prints
Julian Witts
I live beside the sea in the North Devon village of Lee. I have always drawn and painted, but it was the Printmaking course some years ago at The Plough that sparked a passion for woodcuts. I find inspiration in the natural world far and near, and the creatures we share it with.
I cut my design into the maple board with a knife and a few small gouges, making it up as I go along. The wood has a life of its own, and in printmaking 'black is white and left is right', so one never knows exactly what to expect, and it is always very exciting when the first print rolls from the press.
